On the road to 6G: drivers, challenges and enabling technologies

While the implementation of 5G technology is still in full swing, discussions and research activities about the next-generation of mobile communication – 6G – have already started. In the Fraunhofer lighthouse project 6G SENTINEL, the five Fraunhofer institutes involved are working on fundamental key technologies for the new mobile communication standard in order to shape 6G research activities right from the start, to prepare 6G standardization and to accelerate the introduction of commercial 6G networks scheduled for 2030.

This white paper presents challenges and requirements of the 6G mobile standard as well as the objectives of the 6G SENTINEL project:

Next-generation positioning within 6G

Location information already played an important role in earlier generations of mobile networks. However, future application scenarios such as connected driving, industrial and logistics applications, or telemedicine are raising the need for precise positioning to a completely new level. In this context, higher frequency ranges, more flexible networks and higher data rates open up new opportunities in the field of 6G positioning.

The new 6G SENTINEL white paper “Next-generation positioning within 6G“ presents use cases, requirements, performance characteristics and key enabling technologies for positioning in future 6G networks:

  • New 6G use cases: performance goals and need for highest accuracy localization
  • New technology elements: performance enablers for ultra-precise and tightly integrated positioning in 6G
    • THz spectrum and ultra-wide bandwidths
    • Intelligent reflective surfaces (IRS)
    • Cell-free massive MIMO networks
    • Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) for precise positioning
    • Flexible networks and localization service functionality
    • Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC)
